Tesla camera captures moments EF-2 tornado strikes Temple

Video shows strong winds from the twister pick up debris from surrounding buildings, vehicles and plants before tossing them around.

TEMPLE, Texas — New video from a Tesla car camera shows the exact moment an EF-2 tornado struck West Temple on Wednesday, May 22.

Tesla owner James Wilson shared the videos with 6 News, which were captured from the back and side of the vehicle as it was parked outside the restaurant 3 West Alehouse & Grill on West Adams Avenue.

In the video, lightning flashes across the sky as a few vehicles pass by. Then, destruction begins at :35 seconds; a power source explodes off in the distance as the tornado quickly approaches.

Seconds later, strong winds from the twister start to pick up debris from surrounding buildings, vehicles and plants, nearly blocking out the camera as they spiral around in the tornado.

Strong winds continue to pummel through the frame as various debris lies scattered around the area, illuminated through the sheets of rain by near-constant flashes of lightning.

On Thursday, May 23, the National Weather Service confirmed an EF-2 tornado struck West Temple with winds up to 120 mph. The City of Temple announced earlier that day that there were over 30 injuries reported, as well as 100 to 200 buildings damaged from the storm.
