Walmart announces Thanksgiving Day plans for 2023

Major companies have started sharing their plans for Thanksgiving 2023.

WASHINGTON — Walmart has announced that it will be closed on Thanksgiving 2023, marking the fourth year in a row that the nation's largest retailer is giving employees the day off.

"Thanksgiving is such a special day, during a very busy season, we want you to spend that day at home with family and loved ones," John Furner, president and C.E.O. of Walmart U.S. announced in a video

While Walmart and some other major retailers used to have at least limited hours on Thanksgiving, those companies began closing their doors during the holiday in 2020 as the coronavirus pandemic began.

Will Target be open on Thanksgiving?

Back in 2021, Target announced it would permanently no longer open its stores on Thanksgiving Day. Thanksgiving is also one of the seven holidays that Costco closes its U.S. warehouses

While some major chains haven't yet announced whether they'll keep their doors shut again on Nov. 23, more are likely to do so. Last year's list of closures included most major grocery chains, plus numerous retailers that hoped to draw customers instead to Thanksgiving online shopping.

In recent years, companies have shifted toward earlier and earlier holiday shopping deals. Target, Walmart, Amazon, Best Buy and Kohl's have each wrapped up competing sales over the past couple weeks.

AlixPartners, the global consulting firm, forecasts that holiday sales will be up an "underwhelming" 3% to 6%, lower than last year's 6.6% growth. The firm's holiday outlook survey found 26% of consumers plan on spending less this holiday season than last year’s.
