Winter weather operations will start today and will last until tomorrow if needed, the transportation department says.

WACO, Texas — Editor's Note | Above and below video is a segment from 2021.

Waco will begin its 24-hour winter weather operations starting Wednesday, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) said.

Due to the potential mix of sub-freezing temperatures and freezing rain, since Tuesday maintenance crews began pretreating roadways and de-icing operations. They will continue operations in the eight counties the department serves if needed through Thursday, TxDOT stated.

TxDOT instructs drivers to abide by all rules of the road and to give other drivers 200 feet of space as crews treat roads.

If you can, avoid unnecessary trips, TxDOT advised. If you have to travel:

  • Buckle up
  • Drive to conditions
  • Increase your following distance between you and the vehicle in front of you
  • Do not use cruise control or lane assist
