Waco students plan to march for gun safety at Heritage Square

"We're the ones that are going to be the people of the future, and we need to stand up to change it."

On Saturday, as people from across the nation "march for their lives," Waco students and their supporters will also be bringing awareness to gun violence in schools.

Organizers say they cannot go to the national march in Washington but wanted to have a local one in Waco. They want lawmakers to ban bump stocks -- something President Trump's administration has already taken steps to do. They also want businesses to stop selling certain types of firearms like the AR-15, and "close gun law loopholes."

"I mean it’s our lives that we're standing up for as well as others,” said student organizer Casie Pollard. “We're the ones that are going to be the people of the future, and we need to stand up to change it.”

They also want adults to support increased gun control measures.

"I think what has been interesting about this latest movement, is the Parkland shooting happened at a school where kids were old enough to speak back and make their voices heard,” said organizer Kyndall Rothaus. “It’s like if they're speaking then we as adults need to do the best we can to give them a platform to get their voices heard."

The march will begin at 3 p.m. at Heritage Square in Waco. Once the march is over, there will be a rally where students will give several speeches.

Not everyone is pleased with the planned marches. A local open carry group will be holding a counter-protest in Killeen. Read about that counter-protest and the other marches by clicking here.
