Greater Hewitt Chamber of Commerce offers $10K in scholarships to local seniors

This is the 11th year they will offer scholarships and since it began in 2008, they've awarded about $70,000 to students in the Hewitt area.

WACO, Texas — The Greater Hewitt Chamber of Commerce is offering $10,000 in scholarships to local seniors.

This is the 11th year they will offer scholarships and since it began in 2008, they've already awarded about $70,000 to students in the Hewitt area.

Executive Director Alissa Cady said they started this to give back to their community.

"We just believe in education and we want to just be the backbone of the community and provide opportunities for students to continue their education," Cady said.

Ryan Parker and Emily Mosley are two students who graduated this year and both received scholarships.

They both graduated from Midway High School and they said it feels great to be rewarded for the work they've done in their community, by their community.

"It was really nice to have that recognition and verification as we go into a time of uncertainty for college," Mosley said.

"It feels very good to be rewarded by your community because those are people that you know and those are people you see at the store, and it's just really nice to feel validated by your community," Parker said.

Both students will be part of the Baylor Honors Program in the fall.

To be eligible, you must be a Midway Independent School District senior or a senior who's parent works for the chamber of commerce.

You can apply directly on their website. The deadline was extended to December 2, according to Cady, so students can get acclimated to their senior year and have enough time to apply.
